Bodegas Piqueras has been a family winery for over 100 years, currently being looked after by the 4th generation of winemakers, oenologists and winegrowers. They make quality wines, with native grapes such as Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell, from the DO Almansa area.
The vineyards are located around the Castle of Almansa, with vines that are up to 90 years old that produce grapes high in concentration and quality, perfect for making unique and highly expressive red and white wines.
 
The winemaker of Bodegas Piqueras teamed up for this project with sommelier José Joaquin Cortés who bears the title 'Nariz de Oro' ('golden nose' or the equivalent of 'Master of Wine' in Spain).

TERROIR

The 80-year-old vineyards are located 900 meters above sea level and are grown organically on a fairly poor subsoil of mainly limestone. Organic agriculture, nutrient-poor soils composed of stone covered with limestone slabs with very little rainfall throughout the year.
 

VINIFICATION

The grapes are harvested by hand from mid-October onwards. Once the grapes are in the tank, they remain for about 3 days performing a cold pre maceration to give the wine more colour, freshness and aromas controlled at about 28 degrees, then remains together with the skins for about 5 days performing soft daily pumping over for the extraction of fine tannins.
Malolactic fermentation is carried out in the same stainless steel tanks receiving a gentle bâtonnage stirring its fine lees for 3 months, which gives the wine more volume and elegance. After this, the wine is racked by gravity and aged for a further 14 months in medium-long toasted French Allier oak barrels of about 300 litres.
 

FOOD PAIRING

Can be served perfectly with tapas (chorizo, jamon iberico…) but also with risotto, grilled and roasted meat. Also delicious with mature cheeses.
 
 
The Los Losares has an intense cherry red colour, aromas of ripe black fruits with notes of plums and raisins on the attack as well as with a subtle impression of vanilla, cinnamon and cloves. A little rosemary finishes it off in the aftertaste.
 
Lush mouth structure with powerful yet elegant tannins. Full-bodied and silky aftertaste where the oak touch is clearly noticeable as well as the aromas of ripe plums that are typical of the Garnacha Tintorera of this Los Losares from Bodegas Piqueras.
